Week 5: Buc' ing the Trend

It's no secret that the Denver Defense is nowhere to be found on Sundays. I heard Chris Collinsworth say this week that Denver had the "worst defense in history." Despite being a die-hard Bronco fan, I couldn't help but agree - to a certain extent. I mean, the Broncos defense flat out stinks. They can't stop the run, can't sack the QB, and they can't cause turnovers let alone tackle. With the exception of Champ Bailey who is fierce in run support and D.J. Williams who leads the league in tackles (34), the Broncos simply don't have enough impact players up front and on the ends to cause problems for opposing teams. Elvis Dumervil has been hampered by a broken finger and Dewayne Robertson hasn't proved that his balky knee isn't a concern. Going into week 5 this trend has to stop if the Broncos want to make a serious play for the AFC West. Tampa Bay comes to Mile High this week fresh off of a victory over Green Bay. Not only do the Bucs come into Invesco with a 3-1 record, they're doing it with a familiar face behind center, Brian Griese and a stout defense that could cause Cutler some problems. Getting back to Griese, he has posted a 3-0 record since taking over for the injured Jeff Garcia but he has struggled with interceptions as he has done for most of his career. Michael Pittman will also be playing his former team but he's happy to be in Denver now (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/ne

) and you can imagine emotions might be riding high with both Griese and Pittman looking to take it to their former teams.

Denver will win if:

1) They win the turnover battle - Denver had 4 turnovers against K.C. that cost them the game. They simply cannot turn the ball over on offense and rely on their defense to make plays.

2) Score loads of points and keep pressure on: If Denver strikes early and often, Denver can put up huge numbers. Look for Denver to go for the throat in the first 3 plays to get Cutler and company in a rhythm. The Broncos also need a strong 3rd quarter if they want to win.

3) Defense, please stand up: Let the critics fuel the fire, step the F up, and hit someone in the mouth already!! Pressure on Griese will be key.   - My prediction - Broncos 38 - Bucs 24      - All Day
